SCOR vs. SCOR DS: What Changed and Why It Matters

The Supply Chain Operations Reference model has been the global benchmark for supply chain performance since 1996. But as digital transformation, sustainability pressures, and global disruption reshaped how supply chains actually work, the original framework needed a fundamental overhaul. The SCOR Digital Standard (SCOR DS) was released in 2019 and updated in 2022 to better describe dynamic, asynchronous digital supply chains, rather than the linear system presented by previous versions.

The core structural shift

The most visible change is the model's shape. SCOR DS is illustrated as a double infinity loop, reflecting the modern reality of supply chain networks — with no artificial starts or stops from process to process — replacing the familiar left-to-right linear flow of Plan → Source → Make → Deliver → Return. This isn't cosmetic. It signals a fundamental rethinking of how supply chains operate: less like a pipeline, more like a continuously adapting network.

New processes

Elements of the old model remain visible in SCOR DS, but new process areas have been added, including Orchestrate, Synchronize, Regenerate, and Transform. Of these, Orchestrate is the most significant addition. While SCOR V12 was primarily process-oriented across Plan, Source, Make, Deliver, Return, and Enable, SCOR DS expands this foundation to include digital capabilities, sustainability (ESG KPIs), agility, resilience, and the new Orchestrate process area.

Sustainability and digital integration

The new model modernizes the framework to include sustainability standards and a digital body of knowledge. Best practices were realigned with digital strategies, including new training content and integrated sustainability standards using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). This matters because ESG performance is increasingly a boardroom and investor concern — not just an operational one.

Accessibility

SCOR DS is open-access and fully digital, lowering the barrier for organizations of all sizes to adopt the standard — a meaningful change from the paywalled previous versions.

Why it matters

Global market volatility, complex supply networks, and emerging technologies such as AI, IoT, and advanced analytics demand flexible and data-driven supply chain systems. SCOR DS is ASCM's answer to that reality. Organizations still using the SCOR V12 mindset — treating supply chains as linear, efficiency-first pipelines — risk missing the resilience, sustainability, and digital orchestration dimensions that define competitive advantage today.
